AMA, or the Ottawa Academy of Martial Arts combines MMA, or Mixed Martial Arts, program with the technical ground game of Renzo Gracie Jiu-Jitsu with our hard-hitting Muay Thai program.
Students learn Mixed Martial Arts Techniques that build on striking, wrestling, submissions and escapes. All training is conducted in an open minded, safe, team-oriented environment. As the classes progress, students increase their cardio intensity and strength to help improve technique and endurance to increase their fitness levels. Once proficient in the MMA Technique and MMA Fitness programs, students may be invited to enroll in the MMA Sparring class, where advanced techniques are honed and refined to prepare them for the Cage.
BJJ, or Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, is the most effective martial art in the world. Today, in any reality-fighting tournament, 99% of the competitors will have a certain level of knowledge in BJJ, because it is proven to work in the ring. Training closely in pairs, students learn very quickly the effectiveness of this technique when applied correctly. Proper technique and good position dictate the outcome of a fight whether in competition or on the street. BJJ is easy and fun to learn, but like anything that is worthwhile, it takes a little hard work and determination.
There are numerous ongoing BJJ seminars with monthly visits from world-class champions. Classes are comprised of a warm-up, guard-passing drills, positional drills, technique and training. The two Brazilian jiu-jitsu programs we offer, Blue Belt and Purple belt, are designed to help students achieve the colour of belt indicated. There are also women-only classes for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training and self-defence in a fun, safe, female-student only setting. At Team Renzo Gracie Ottawa, our focus is maintaining the highest level of instruction in BJJ.
